Piercing

At Tattoo Wave we pride ourselves on a high standard of hygiene and as a Professional Piercer, I only use the best quality equipment and jewellery for body piercing. We are registered with the East Herts District Council Health Authority and our premises are inspected regularly. FULL ONSITE AUTOCLAVE STERILISATION is carried out. Each piece of jewellery is individually sterilised in a sealed packet prior to piercing. A new needle (sealed packet) is used every time and disposed of after use. All equipment i.e. clamps etc are also individually sterilised in separate packets and new surgical gloves are worn every time. 316L surgical steel is now illegal for initial piercings due to the higher nickel content which does not conform to the new E.U nickel sensitisation law (E.U. directive 94/27/EC). It may be used in healed piercings only. Instead, we use medical grade titanium Ti 6AL 4V (used since 1950 for medical implants), niobium (less nickel than titanium, Implantanium (low nickel surgical steel), P.T.F.E. and titanium nitride coated over titanium (as used in hospitals to coat pacemakers, and orthopedic implants etc). All metals conform to the new E.U. nickel directive.

Dermal anchors and skin divers

Microdermal implants (also known as surface or dermal anchors) are the latest thing to hit the piercing/body-mod scene. They can be placed everywhere a surface piercing can, and many places they can’t! They are a form of body modification which gives the aesthetic appearance of a transdermal implant, but without the complications of the much more complicated surgery associated with transdermal implants. Although they look similar to a surface piercing, they are different from conventional piercings in that they are composed of two components: an anchor, which is implanted underneath the skin, with a step protruding (or flush with) the surface of the surrounding skin, and the interchangeable jewellery, which is screwed into the threaded hole in the step of the anchor.

Ear Stretching advice

Although I always recommend getting procedures like this done by a professional and I do offer such services at the studio. I appreciate that some people like to stretch their own piercings. I stock all the appropriate jewellery for doing this and can offer some advise.

The key to stretching is time and patience. Your body tissues need time between each stretching stage to adjust, heal and grow new cells. The slower you stretch the easier and more comfortable it will be and the further you will be able to go. If you do not allow sufficient time for tissue regeneration, your skin may tear and scar, or keloid tissue can build up which will not only prolong the healing process but will also limit future stretches.

Surface piercings and growing out

Surface piercings are fairly extreme piercings. They require quite a bit of patience and care to heal. For this reason we often recommend that you have experience with other easier-to-heal piercings before getting a surface piercing.

There have been many methods over the years for trying to coax surface piercings to heal. The main obstacle has been that when flat surface skin is pierced, the body’s natural reaction is to gradually reject the jewellery. The body adds new skin cells from the inside-out. As new layers of skin are added beneath the jewellery, the old layers are pushed toward the surface and where they are eventually sloughed off. The jewellery is often pushed out with the layers of skin it transverses.

Aftercare of your new tattoo

image

The healing period for all tattoos varies from a week to two weeks, and also varies from person to person. Aftercare is very important. Leave the film dressing on over night and remove the next day. (If the dressing splits or comes lose, don’t attempt to re-dress the tattoo, just remove the dressing early)

Wash your tattoo with lukewarm soapy water and pat dry with a clean towel twice daily.

Apply a thin smear of BEPANTHEN OINTMENT to your tattoo a few times a day with clean hands.

After 3-5 days the tattoo will scab. Allow the scab to flake off naturally. It will itch!

Do not Pick or scratch at your new tattoo during the healing process.

Do not Re-dress your tattoo

Do not Expose new tattoo to the sun (or sun bed)

Do not Expose new tattoo to dust/chemicals etc

Do not Go swimming or bath tattoo for long periods during the healing process

We guarantee all our work and hygiene standards. We cannot be held responsible for the way you care for your tattoo.

Aftercare of your new Piercing

Stay clean and healthy

The healthier your lifestyle, the more quickly you can heal. This includes eating well, easing stress and getting enough sleep. A good multivitamin, especially one containing zinc and vitamin C, can help your body rebuild itself. Avoid getting pierced while you are sick. Also, avoid getting pierced while pregnant. Reduce smoking and avoid recreational drug use. Do not touch or play with the jewellery and always wash your hands thoroughly before and after cleaning your piercing. You need only touch it when you are cleaning it.

After-care of your body piercing.

The healing period for all piercings can vary greatly from person to person. Expect between 6-12 weeks on average. There are various factors which will determine the healing time of your piercing. This includes diet, lifestyle, your immune system and irritation to the piercing during the healing period. Remove dressing after approximately 2 hours if one was applyed, clean thoroughly (but gently) 3 times a day using SALINE SOLUTION obtainable from a chemist or opticians OR use warm salty water, using sea salt and boiled water (1/4 tea spoon of sea salt to 1/2 pint hot water). Soaps containing strong perfumes, deodorants & other additives should be avoided during the healing process. Matter secreted from the piercing will dry/crystallise on the jewellery and around the exits of the piercing. This is what you are cleaning and removing. Bathe the area thoroughly moving the jewellery back and forth through the piercing (with clean hands) to prevent the inside from getting infected. Put some solution in a clean egg-cup or soak a cotton wool ball & place over piercing, soak for a few minutes (until water starts to cool) then remove. Dip a cotton bud into remaining solution and gently clean around piercing. For oral (lip, tongue and cheek) piercings, you can rinse the inside of your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash (such as Listerine) at least 3 times daily (diluted with water 1:1). For the outside of facial piercings use the saline/salt solution. You can take anti-inflammatory tablets to reduce any swelling that may occur (ibro-profen/nurofen) or apply ice. Keep practicing these exercises until piercing is totally healed and once a week thereafter.

When you get a piercing done you must be aware that there may be some minor swelling or scarring to the area. Although not a common occurrence, some piercings have the potential to reject or grow out. This is only a caution and you will find that there is only a small amount of people which this will affect.

Appointments at Tattoo Wave

Large custom work (sleeves, back pieces etc) is now rarely on an hourly rate. It’s best to book either a

"full day" of tattooing .12 – 6pm.

Or a "half day" of tattooing 12-4pm or 2-6pm.

The price includes drawing time, breaks etc. An hour or 2 just isn't long enough to get a good chunk of work done on large custom pieces and they end up taking too long to complete.

You WILL be required to pay a cash deposit when you make a booking. The amount of deposit required will depend on the price of the tattoo you're getting done. We require 48 hours notice for a cancelation or change to your appointment or design. Less than this will result in loss of your deposit. So make sure you're 100% certain before you commit to the booking.
